Expertise

I
have participated in multiple outreach events at local schools, science communications
classes and workshops, and presented my work at multiple international
conferences. Throughout my Ph.D. degree, I was able to strengthen my
leadership skills as the marine biology student representative on both department
faculty meetings and the Recruitment/Retention Task Force. To date, I have participated in five
interdisciplinary research cruises in the Arctic, Antarctic, and Atlantic led
by a variety of U.S. and international institutions. I have coordinated
international logistics, transportation of scientific equipment including
hazardous material, deployed a variety of instruments, and led the epibenthic team.
My English writing and communication skills were
strengthened throughout my dissertation, living abroad, writing and
communication classes, and the publication of journal articles. In addition, I
was able to obtain software skills in Microsoft office, R-studio, Matlab,
Ecopath with Ecosim, and GIS.

Responsibilities
During my undergraduate degree (LMU, Munich, Germany), I assisted in the development of a new morphological key for identification of bycatch shark species aboard fishing vessels in the southeast Pacific and Atlantic to decrease handling time. I continued with my Masters degree at the University of Hamburg, Germany where I analyzed the fatty acid and stable isotope composition of holothurians along the Southern Polar Front.
My dissertation was looking at organic matter source presence and availability (phytoplankton, terrestrial, and bacterial) in Chukchi Sea sediments (top 5 cm horizon) and the utilization of these sources by benthic invertebrates common on the shelf. Further, data obtained through my dissertation work were then used to better resolve the detrital pathways in an ECOPATH mass-balance model of the Chukchi Sea.
