Responsibilities

Lucy Scott is a marine scientist
specialising in marine data and information management, as well as Large Marine
Ecosystems Science and Governance, with 20 years’ experience in southern
Africa, West and Central Africa and the Western Indian Ocean region. She has a Master’s
degree in Ichthyology and has previously been the regional Data and Science
Coordinator for the UNDP GEF Agulhas & Somali Current Large Marine
Ecosystems (ASCLME) Project for which she coordinated regional science, data
and information management activities and Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis
(TDA) development for the project in nine countries.
She has in-country experience in South
Africa, Mozambique, Tanzania, Malawi, Comoros, Kenya, Seychelles, Mauritius,
Maldives, Madagascar, Senegal and Ivory Coast on over 70 projects and
programmes. These include project design, project management, stakeholder
consultations, marine research expeditions (design, execution and data
management), data management projects and the development of Geographic
Information Systems, particularly for biodiversity, coastal resource mapping,
aquaculture, conservation planning and long-term monitoring in both freshwater
and marine ecosystems.
She has led or participated in data
management and GIS atlas projects at several scales including the African
Coastal and Marine Atlas, a project involving participants from 16 African,
European and North American countries. She has recently worked on projects
related to climate change and fisheries (Madagascar and Tanzania), capacity
development for Integrated Oceans Management in West and Central Africa, a
toolkit in support of Large Marine Ecosystems Project strategy, and project
development for strengthening networks of Marine Protected Areas (Madagascar). She
has participated in over 160 international working meetings or events (as a
speaker at over 150 international meetings); she is a member of the Steering
Committee of the International Coastal Atlas Network (IODE, IOC/UNESCO), and a
member of the Ecosystem Based Management (EBM) Working Group and Data &
Information Working group for the GEF UNDP Project LME: LEARN.
