IOC-HAB International Phytoplankton Intercalibration (IPI)

1 May 2021 - 31 March 2022

From April 2021 to April 2022, the Canary Islands Harmful Algal Bloom Observatory (OCHAB), University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), Spain in collaboration with the IOC Science and Communication Centre for Harmful Algae, Denmark will conduct a proficiency test on marine phytoplankton abundance and composition amongst laboratories.

The IPI proficiency testing scheme is open for participation to all relevant laboratories globally. This test is divided into two main competency areas and each participant must complete the both to obtain the required certification.

Taxonomical knowledge – in the form of a “Taxonomic Quiz”, will be tested through IOC's OceanTeacher e-Learning Platform.

Sample Abundance and Composition – a number of preserved seawater samples spiked with phytoplankton cultured material or/and natural field samples will be sent to each laboratory.

Programme Schedule:

Registration opens: Monday, 8th March 2021
Samples sent to analysts + online quiz on OceanTeacher: from 30th July 2021 to Thursday, 30th September 2021
Deadline for submission of samples and online test results to lead laboratory: Tuesday, 30th November 2021
